9-1-21 NPS Welcome / 2021-2022 Information

Dear Northville Public Schools Families,

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year! Our official first day of school is just around the corner on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. We are looking forward to hearing our classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds echo with the sounds of students, teachers, and staff focused on learning and reconnecting as classroom and school communities. This communication includes several important reminders, along with links to resources for students and families to support a positive and successful transition into the school year.

Annual Registration Reminder

Every year, all families (new and returning) are asked to complete the required digital Annual Registration for each student prior to the first day of school. Families may complete these forms through Parent Portal.  This process ensures that we have the most up-to-date information and contacts for your student.

Covid-19 Safety and Mitigation Plans

As we come together in learning this year, it is important to remember to perform at-home self-monitoring using the COVID-19 Daily Student Symptom Screening Tool.   This screener serves as a daily reminder that children who are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 (or ANY illness)  need to stay home from school. This is an important measure that will help prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in using this screener each school day.  In addition to the daily screener students and staff are required to wear masks while indoors.

The NPS 2021-22 COVID-19 General Mitigation Response Plan outlines the multiple layers of COVID-19 safety measures being implemented across the district to support the health and safety of all students and staff.  School principals will share specific building procedures with families.   Processes are in place at each school to teach and/or reinforce safety measures with all students. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document answers additional questions you may have as you and your child are preparing for the start of the 2021-22 school year.

Transportation / Bus Route Updates

Durham Transportation Services, our transportation provider, is currently updating bus route information this week in Parent Portal. All bussing information will be finalized on Friday, September 3rd with adjustments being made throughout the week.  All families utilizing school transportation should review their students' transportation information this weekend before the first day of school on Tuesday, September 7th.

School Lunches

All student lunches are provided free of charge to families for the 2021-22 school year!  The USDA announced nationwide waivers which allows Northville Public Schools to provide students with free lunches during the 2021-2022 school year.  Families who would qualify for free/reduced lunch regardless of the waiver are still encouraged to complete the Free/Reduced Application, as that eligibility offers other financial assistance.

Elementary and preschool Families must preorder lunches via Nutrislice by 8:30 am for students receiving lunch through Food Services. Middle school and high school students will receive a free meal for lunch without the need for preordering. Students may purchase ala carte items in addition to a free meal. Visit the District Food Services webpage to order through Nutrislice, learn the components of a free lunch, and view menus and nutritional information.

Supporting Students Transition to School

We recognize that our students, families, and staff have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in different ways, and that a number of our students may be attending school in-person for the first time in eighteen months.  Others have been impacted by loss or grief.  For some, the adjustment to face to face learning could present some mental health challenges, others may need additional academic support.

Each of our principals have been working with their school teams to welcome your students back to school!  Careful attention and focus will be given to reestablishing school routines, relationships and supporting students wherever they are in this process. Our building Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)   teams will continue to monitor all students to ensure the appropriate supports are implemented.

The following resources include strategies you may find helpful for supporting your child’s transition to school:

Part of building a strong community includes strong partnerships between families, our schools and community agencies (families and schools can’t do it all!)   Given this, we are providing links to local agencies that provide a variety of programs and resources that can assist students who need a level of support beyond what the school and family can provide and/or to enhance the support they are currently receiving.

Information about the 2021-2022 school year is also located on our District website.  Each of our schools will continue to communicate with families via email and weekly newsletters throughout the school year.  We are excited to continue our journey to open a World of Possibilities for and with each of our students, together with our families as we launch the 2021-22 school year!

Sincerely,

Mary K. Gallagher
