Brian Zhang, a 2025 graduate of Northville High School, was one of only five students selected to represent the United States at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), held July 18–24, 2025, in Paris, France. Competing against over 400 of the world’s top high school physics students from more than 80 countries, Brian earned a prestigious Gold Medal through years of dedicated preparation and scientific curiosity.
A Rigorous Selection Process
To become one of the five members of the U.S. Physics Team, Brian participated in a multi-stage selection process coordinated by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). This began with taking the F=ma exam and the USA Physics Olympiad (USAPhO), followed by a training camp featuring additional exams and experimental labs. After years of preparation and three consecutive training camps from 10th through 12th grade, Brian earned his spot on the traveling team.
Preparation Fueled by Curiosity
Brian’s journey began in 8th grade with an introductory physics class and progressed through virtual F=ma and USAPhO courses in 9th and 10th grade. For the IPhO, he dedicated himself to studying textbooks, handouts, and solving hundreds of practice problems, including previous Olympiad exams. Reflecting on his experience, Brian shared:
"Regardless of the contest results, the most important gains that I reaped from my IPhO experience were not from the contest itself but rather the years of preparation before. What ultimately drove my progress and kept me motivated was an endless curiosity to dig deeper — to question why everything in the world is the way it is, or what would happen if we tweaked this or that."
His scientific curiosity and long-term dedication were key to his success.
The Competition Experience
The 2025 IPhO was held at École Polytechnique in Paris and included a 5-hour theory exam and a 5-hour experimental exam on separate days. Beyond the competition, participants explored physics labs and iconic Parisian landmarks.
Looking Ahead
This fall, Brian will begin his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), majoring in physics with the potential to pursue a second field of study.
Gratitude to Northville Schools
Brian’s parents expressed deep appreciation for the Northville Public Schools community and educators who supported his academic journey. Special thanks were given to physics teacher Mrs. Kim Garber, chemistry teacher Mrs. Melanie Obrigkeit, counselor Ms. Emily Manoogian, and principal Mr. Koski, whose personal support helped Brian accelerate his physics learning early on.
Brian’s achievement highlights the strength of Northville’s inspiring learning environment — one that challenges students academically while encouraging independent exploration of their passions.
